Buy an iPhone. How Did Apple Get Us Here?

There’s a joke we’ve all heard: “Sell your kidney and buy an iPhone.” It’s obviously exaggerated, but the fact that this joke became so popular says something interesting about how Apple has positioned its product.

The iPhone stopped being just a phone a long time ago. It became a status symbol. People don’t only buy it for the camera, processor or features. For many, carrying an iPhone represents being successful, premium or simply being part of a certain lifestyle.

Apple’s marketing plays a huge role in this. The minimalist advertising, premium stores, beautifully designed packaging and cinematic product launches all create a feeling around the product. Apple rarely makes the conversation purely about specifications. It makes the product desirable.

Social media made this even stronger. Celebrities, influencers and creators constantly show their iPhones in photos, videos and unboxing content. The phone became part of the lifestyle people see online, which naturally creates the feeling that you should have one too.

The interesting part is that even people who can’t comfortably afford the latest iPhone still try to get one. They wait for discounts, choose EMI plans, buy older models or trade in their existing phones. The desire often becomes bigger than the actual need.

That’s where the kidney joke comes in. “Sell your kidney for an iPhone” is funny because everyone understands the idea behind it. Nobody actually wants to sell a kidney, but the joke captures just how desirable Apple has made the product.

Apple didn’t invent status marketing. Luxury watches, cars and fashion brands have been doing it for decades. But Apple brought that psychology into something almost everyone carries every day.

The real lesson isn’t about making an expensive product. It’s about making a product mean something.

Because when people stop asking, “Do I need this?” and start asking, “Do I want to be seen with this?”, you’ve built more than a product.

You’ve built a brand.

There’s a joke we’ve all heard: “Sell your kidney and buy an iPhone.” It’s obviously exaggerated, but the fact that this joke became so…

[3
24,25,28,26,27
post-82","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-why-branding","tag-apple-branding","tag-apple-marketing","tag-brand-pos","tag-branding-strategy","tag-consumer-psychology
["GET
